Becoming the Divorce Travel Capital of the World 1/6 Divorce Cases Involving Foreigners
According to the Australian Daily Telegraph on April 10, London has become the "divorce travel" capital of the world, and about one sixth of the local divorce cases involve foreigners.
Analysts said that in the case of divorce in the London court, some divorce applicants, especially women, are often able to profit from the distribution of property, which prompted many people to move to London before starting the divorce process, so as to obtain the qualification for divorce in the London court. Statistics from The Times show that of the 154000 divorce cases in England and Wales every year, 24000 involve foreigners.
James Stewart, a lawyer in London, said: "It is clear that the number of people who want to divorce is increasing. People who want to divorce have come to the UK to live in order to obtain the qualification for divorce in London. Settlers need to live in the UK for at least six years, and non-settlers need to live in the UK for at least one year."
Mark Harper, a lawyer, said that the number of foreign divorcees increased not only because London is a tourist destination, but also because it is the "divorce capital" of the world. It is very generous to women in the distribution of divorce property. Even if they have completed divorce procedures abroad, they can still get another share of property through the London court.
